So what is the definition of Internet?
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standards Internet protocols suite (TCP/IP) to serve several billion users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW), the infrastructure to support email, and peer-to-peer networks. The internet is also called Information Superhighway, Cyberspace, the Virtual World or INET
What is network?
Network is a group of computers and associated devices that are connected by communications facilities
The Internet is made up of millions of computers linked together around the world in such a way that information can be exchanged between any computer at any time. The Internet is the transport vehicle for the information stored in files or documents on another computer. The Internet itself doesn't contain information. It is a slight wrong statement to say a "document was found on the Internet " It would be more correct to say it was found through or using the Internet. What it was found in (or on) is one of the computers linked to the Internet
So what is the most important properties of the Internet?
- Network dedicated
- Based on the Internet suite of protocols (TCP/IP protocols)
- A non-commercial
- Self governing
- Used for mostly to communication and research
- No real center or central "Hub."
- Not an online service
