Drug abuse is using drugs in ways that will harm our body. Drinking too much alcohol, taking overdose of aspirin and sniffing glue in excessive amounts are some example of drug abuse. Illegal drugs such as ganja and heroin produce serious harmful effects on the body even when taken in small amounts.
There is 5 main types of drugs :
- Stimulants
- Depressants
- Narcotics
- Hallucinogens
- Inhalants
1. Stimulants
These drugs speed up the processes of the central nervous system. Some people take these to stay awake for long periods or to maintain a level of excitement.
Example of stimulant : Cocaine (Cocaine users can be highly depressed and exhausted when the effects of the drug wear off)
2. Depressants
These drugs slow down the activities of the central nervous system. They are taken to help someone relax or reduce worry. When depressant drugs enter the body, they affect the workings of the brain, resulting in loss of control and poor judgment.
Example of depressants :
- Barbiturates : An overdose barbiturates, especially taken with alcohol, can lead coma even death
- Tranquilisers
These drugs relieve pain and induce sleep by depressing the central nervous system. Abuse of these drugs can cause vomiting, nausea, and poor mental and physical performance.
Example of narcotics :
- Opium (Produced from the poppy plant)
- Heroin
- Morphine
- Codeine
4. Hallucinogens
These can change person's mood and make him or her hallucinate. The person may see horrifying things and become very scared or disturbed. Some may even injure themselves in their terror. This type of drug is especially dangerous to its users because they have long-term effects on the brain. After usage, the harmful effects of the drug can recur, bringing panic.
Example of hallucinogens :
- LSD
- Cannabis : Ganja, grass or marijuana (Taking in ganja leads to confusion, lack of mental coordination and nervous breakdown
5. Inhalants
These drugs which are inhaled or sniffed in the form of vapor. They cause hallucinations and depression to the person sniffs them in excessive amounts. Harmful gases present in the inhalants can also cause serious damage to the brain, lungs, kidneys, liver and other parts of the body.
Example of inhalants :

Then what is the consequences of drug abuse?
Drug abuse brings us nothing but troubles. It can cause depression, which is state of mind of high anxiety, unhappiness, panic, hopelessness, confused thoughts and great fear. Long periods of depression may lead to mental disorder or illness.
1. Hallucination
People who are hallucinating become unaware of themselves and the surroundings. This may cause them to jump from a tall building, commit murder or carry out activities which are harmful to everyone.
2. Addiction
Addiction is the condition in which a drug abuser is dependent on repeated doses of a drug for comfort of body and mind.
Drug addicts may die from overdose of drugs. To stop taking drugs is possible, but it needs great determination and may involve external help such as those given in drug rehabilitation centers. In the absence of drugs in the body, drug addicts will show with drawl symptoms such as yawning, profuse sweating, restlessness, fever, uncontrollable shivering, aching bones and joints, abdominal pains, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
3. Contraction of disease
Drugs which are injected into the body add one more major risk to their uses - contracting AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). AIDS is a fatal disease which may spread among drug addicts when they share needles contaminated with the AIDS virus to inject themselves with drugs.
4. Social problems
Drug abuse creates social problems such as drug-related crimes and family breakdown. They may steal and commit other crimes. They perform badly in their work or studies and neglect their families. They are irritable, aggressive, bold, and reckless and this usually leads to fights and other forms of aggression such as vandalism.
